In order to achieve Dita Axial’s carefully considered footprint, which is smaller than the traditional aviator, DITA devised a series of groundbreaking techniques to ensure the frame’s precision mechanics would match the appeal of its architecture. That process began early in the design stage, when designers softened the aviatorform and reduced the size of the lens; the resulting proportions convey an intellectual character without sacrificing the frame’s sport edge.
The slender, lightweight titanium exoskeleton is the result of customized metal dies, which are fitted into specialized heat presses and used to mold the frame into shape. DITA’s signature Talon mount design creates the illusion of a “floating” lens; these extruded Talon elements are bent into shape with knurling, or fine grooves, on the front, invoking elements from thehandcrafted metalwork of early telescopes.
Like those early astronomic instruments, each of the frame’s components is finely calibrated in the manufacturing process to minimize mechanical tension and ensure a precise fit. The extraordinary fit and finish gives Axial and elegant yet mechanized character.
